Nigerian businesswoman and philanthropist Apostle Folorunso Alakija has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom in recognition of her contributions to business, philanthropy and leadership.

The honour was conferred on Friday, October 16, 2026, at The Radcliffe Centre during the university’s Africa Day celebration, with Vice-Chancellor Professor David Cole presenting the degree.

The ceremony recognised Alakija’s achievements across several sectors and her efforts to create opportunities for others through enterprise, mentorship and philanthropy.

Speaking at the event, Cole said Alakija represented the values of success, service and leadership upheld by the university, which is marking its 50th anniversary.

The Dean of the Faculty of Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Debarpita Bardhan-Correia, also praised Alakija’s commitment to helping others succeed. She described the occasion as a celebration of an African woman whose work reflects the potential of collaboration between Africa and the United Kingdom through education, business and leadership.

Delivering the oration, Professor Shalom Lloyd MBE commended Alakija for her ability to connect people across cultures, transform organisations and inspire others. She also stressed the importance of investing in Africa’s next generation of leaders.

Alakija urges young people to pursue excellence

Accepting the honour, Alakija thanked Almighty God and expressed appreciation to the university’s Council and Senate for the recognition.

She said receiving the distinction during the university’s Africa Day celebration made the occasion particularly meaningful, while encouraging young people to recognise their potential and use their achievements to make a positive difference.

“Africa is a continent of immense potential, creativity and resilience, and that achievement carries responsibility to serve others,” she said.

She urged students and young people to pursue their ambitions with passion, perseverance and diligence, while remaining humble and committed to excellence.

Her message centred on the importance of ensuring that personal success goes beyond individual accomplishments to create opportunities and improve the lives of others.

A career spanning multiple sectors

Alakija has built a career across banking, fashion, oil and gas, real estate, printing and enterprise development. Her work in philanthropy and mentorship has also contributed to her public profile, particularly among women and young people seeking opportunities in business.

Following the ceremony, the university hosted a reception in her honour, where she interacted with students, alumni and other guests, offering advice and encouragement.

Family members, including her son, Dele Alakija, and her sister, Arinola Ogbara, attended alongside friends, university representatives and well-wishers.

The recognition adds to Alakija’s public record of achievements across business and philanthropy, while highlighting the importance of leadership, service and supporting the next generation.
