The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC) has praised Nigerian teachers for their contribution to the country’s development, while accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration of failing to do enough to improve their welfare. The council made the remarks in a message to mark the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan.
Ologbondiyan described teachers as some of the country’s “true heroes”, saying they continued to educate and shape young Nigerians despite the challenges facing the profession.
He said teachers had remained committed to their work even as many struggled with poor working conditions, rising living costs and inadequate support.
“Nigerian teachers are true heroes. They have continued to mould lives, build character and sustain our educational system even in the face of neglect and hardship,” he said.
While celebrating teachers, however, the ADC-PCC took aim at the APC-led government over what it described as the worsening conditions faced by workers in the education sector.
Ologbondiyan listed the removal of the petroleum subsidy, rising transportation costs, poor and irregular salaries, inadequate welfare packages, limited training opportunities and deteriorating school infrastructure among the issues affecting teachers.
He questioned how teachers could be expected to perform at their best when they were struggling to meet their own basic needs.
“How can a teacher teach effectively on an empty stomach? How can a teacher give his best when he cannot afford transportation to school because of high fuel prices, when his salary cannot meet his monthly needs, when he has no adequate medical insurance and cannot afford decent accommodation?” he asked.
The ADC-PCC spokesman also alleged that the teaching profession had lost some of its value under the APC administration, pointing to concerns over the remuneration of teachers in primary and secondary schools and recurring industrial disputes in tertiary institutions over workers’ welfare.
Despite these challenges, he said teachers had continued to show commitment to their responsibilities and deserved better pay, improved working conditions and greater professional support.
Ologbondiyan said the ADC would make teachers’ welfare and education a priority if its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, is elected in 2027.
He said the party planned to improve wages and allowances, provide comprehensive health insurance and affordable housing, expand opportunities for professional development and improve the conditions in which teachers work.
“The ADC will place education and teachers’ welfare at the centre of its national development agenda because no nation can rise above the quality of its teachers,” he said.
Ologbondiyan urged teachers across the country to remain hopeful, saying the party would work towards restoring dignity and pride to the profession.
He also extended the campaign council’s best wishes to Nigerian teachers, assuring them that their contribution to the country would not be forgotten.
