More details have emerged following the military aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday. The aircraft, which was travelling from Benin to Lagos, crashed in a swampy area close to the Nigerian Navy base in Igbokoda.
The Minister of Aviation said 32 people were aboard the aircraft, made up of 25 passengers and seven crew members.
The condition of those on board, however, remained unclear, with authorities yet to release an official figure on casualties.
Images and footage from the crash site showed a badly burnt wreckage, with military equipment scattered around the area.
Some witnesses said they saw the aircraft circling several times before it eventually went down, as rainfall intensified. The reason for the circling was not immediately known, and the cause of the crash remained unclear.
Military personnel from the nearby naval base were leading rescue efforts at the site. The operation was reportedly being made more difficult by the swampy terrain, which has limited access to the crash location.
The Nigerian Air Force has confirmed that the aircraft belonged to the military and said rescue operations were ongoing.
As the operation continues, attention is now focused on locating and assisting those who may have survived and determining the circumstances that led to the crash.
Further updates are expected from the authorities as rescue efforts continue.
