President Bola Tinubu has nominated four national commissioners and two resident electoral commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following vacancies created by the expiration of existing tenures.
The nominations were announced in a statement issued on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Among the nominees is Dr Bala Bila, whose appointment as the national commissioner representing the North-East has been renewed.
The new national commissioners include Professor Mustapha Aliu, who is to replace Professor Abdullahi Zuru as the North-West representative, and Bashir Muhammed Umar, nominated to succeed Professor Muhammad Adamu as the North-Central representative.
Tinubu also nominated Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, the current Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, as the South-West national commissioner. She is expected to replace Professor Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure ends on October 24, 2026.
The two nominees for resident electoral commissioner positions are retired permanent secretary Dr Samuel Akinjide Akinleye, representing Ekiti State, and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi from Jigawa State, who is to replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.
According to the statement, the Senate will scrutinise the nominees before their appointments can be confirmed.
The President has urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process in view of the forthcoming general elections scheduled for January next year.
