Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for greater access to education, healthcare, skills development and economic opportunities as part of efforts to tackle poverty and improve the lives of vulnerable families.
The First Lady made the call on Saturday, October 17, 2026, to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which has the theme, “United for Peace and Human Rights.”
In her message, Mrs Tinubu stressed the need for collective action to build a society where everyone can live with dignity, access meaningful opportunities and realise their full potential.
She noted that addressing poverty requires sustained efforts to ensure that vulnerable families have access to essential services and opportunities to improve their living conditions.
The First Lady also emphasised the importance of compassion, effective interventions and collaboration in creating lasting solutions to poverty.
According to her, expanding access to education, healthcare, skills acquisition, decent livelihoods and economic opportunities remains essential to helping individuals and families overcome poverty.
She urged continued commitment to building pathways that enable more Nigerians to improve their circumstances and contribute to the country’s development.
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed annually on October 17 to raise awareness about the challenges faced by people living in poverty and promote efforts to address inequality and social exclusion.
