Dangote Cement Spends Over ₦32m on Scholarships, Transformers in Edo Communities

General

Dangote Cement Plc has invested over ₦32 million in education and electricity infrastructure in its host communities in Okpella, Edo State, awarding scholarships to 80 students and commissioning four transformers.

The projects were unveiled on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as part of the company’s Community Development Agreement (CDA) with the host communities.

The scholarship programme covers 60 undergraduate students studying at various tertiary institutions across Nigeria and 20 secondary school students from the company’s host communities.

Each undergraduate beneficiary received ₦500,000, while the secondary school students were awarded ₦100,000 each to support their education.

Speaking at the event, the Social Performance Manager of Dangote Cement’s Okpella Plant, Mr Daniel Obamina, said the initiative was part of the company’s efforts to support young people and create opportunities for them to achieve their academic goals.

He described education as an important driver of social development, adding that the scholarship scheme was designed to ease some of the financial pressure on students and their families.

Obamina said the company hoped the beneficiaries would use the opportunity to build successful careers and contribute meaningfully to their communities and the country.

He also explained that the commissioning of four 500KVA transformers was aimed at improving electricity supply in the benefiting communities.

According to him, better power distribution would support local businesses, improve learning conditions and enhance the quality of life of residents.

He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to meeting its obligations under the Community Development Agreement and ensuring that its host communities benefit from its presence.

The Chairman of the Executive Committee of Host Communities (ECHC), High Chief Peter Afiabor, commended Dangote Cement for what he described as its consistent efforts to honour its commitments to the communities.

Afiabor said the scholarships would provide relief to families struggling with the cost of education, while the transformers would help address electricity challenges affecting residents and businesses.

He urged the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and make good use of the opportunity, describing them as potential ambassadors of their communities.

Some of the beneficiaries and their families also expressed appreciation to the company, noting that the financial support would help reduce the burden of educational expenses and encourage students to remain focused on their studies.

The event was attended by traditional rulers, community representatives, youth groups, parents, students, government officials and senior representatives of Dangote Cement.

The scholarship awards and transformer projects form part of the company’s wider community development efforts, which include investments in education, infrastructure and youth empowerment in its host communities.
