The Nigerian broadcast space is getting another addition as Real Broadcasting Network (RBN) prepares to take its television offering to DStv viewers. While the DStv launch will introduce RBN to a much wider television audience, the network is not exactly new to broadcasting. RBN has already been building its presence through news, radio and digital content, with its operations extending to Abuja.
One of its existing platforms is Real 99.3 FM in Abuja, where the station has been developing a mix of news, conversations, entertainment and other programmes for its listeners. RBN has also been expanding beyond traditional broadcasting through its digital platform and mobile app, which gives users access to news, live television and radio, videos, podcasts and other content. The platform also allows members of the public to participate in the news-gathering process through its RealWitness feature, where users can share news tips and eyewitness reports with the newsroom.
For RBN, the move to DStv therefore comes as another stage in an expansion that has already taken shape across different forms of broadcasting.
It also comes at a time when the way Nigerians consume media is changing. Audiences now move easily between television, radio, smartphones and social media, while broadcasters are finding new ways to remain relevant across these platforms. RBN’s presence across radio, television and digital media reflects that shift, giving the network an opportunity to connect with audiences in different ways. The DStv arrival could also introduce the brand to viewers who may not have come across its radio or digital platforms before. For those audiences, the television channel will be their first introduction to what RBN has been building. And that is where the curiosity begins: what will RBN bring to the DStv audience, and what kind of programming will eventually define the channel? With an existing radio operation in Abuja, a growing digital platform and its mobile app, RBN is now preparing to take another step in expanding its reach.
As more details about the DStv launch and programming emerge, viewers will have the opportunity to see what the network brings to an increasingly competitive Nigerian broadcast landscape.
For RBN, the move represents more than simply joining another television platform. It is an opportunity to grow its audience and establish itself more firmly in Nigeria’s evolving media space.
