NGX CEO Jude Chiemeka Emerges President of African Securities Exchanges Association

General

The Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), Jude Chiemeka, has emerged President of the African Securities Exchanges Association (ASEA).

Chiemeka assumed the position on September 30, 2026, succeeding Pierre Célestin Rwabukumba, the Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Stock Exchange.

His appointment places him at the helm of an association focused on strengthening cooperation and integration among securities exchanges across Africa.

Chiemeka, who also chairs the West African Capital Markets Integration Council (WACMIC), brings more than three decades of experience in the capital markets, with a career spanning securities trading, asset management and investment banking.

ASEA said his tenure comes at a time when African capital markets are seeking deeper connections, improved liquidity and greater use of technology to make markets more accessible to investors.

Speaking on his appointment, Chiemeka described the opportunity to lead the association as a privilege, particularly at a time when stronger integration and technology-driven innovation are becoming increasingly important to Africa’s economic development.

“It is a privilege to lead the African Securities Exchanges Association at a time when capital market integration and technology-driven innovation are paramount to unlocking Africa’s economic potential,” he said.

Chiemeka said he would build on the work of his predecessor by pushing for stronger cross-border investment frameworks, deeper liquidity pools and greater attention to sustainable finance across member exchanges.

Rwabukumba, in his outgoing address, congratulated Chiemeka and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the association into its next phase.

He described Chiemeka’s experience in the Nigerian market and his leadership of WACMIC as valuable assets as ASEA continues efforts to bring African exchanges closer together.

Under Chiemeka’s leadership, the association plans to focus on making it easier for investors to move across African markets through initiatives such as inter-exchange trading and cross-listing.

Digital innovation is also expected to feature prominently, with ASEA looking to promote financial technology and modern market infrastructure that can improve efficiency and make capital markets more accessible, including to retail investors.

The association also plans to strengthen links with global institutional investors while encouraging greater participation from local investors.

Sustainable finance will be another area of focus, including efforts to promote common environmental, social and governance standards and expand green bond listings across member exchanges.

Chiemeka’s appointment is expected to give Nigeria a stronger voice in ongoing efforts to build a more integrated African capital market and encourage greater cross-border investment across the continent.
