The Akwa Ibom State Government has denied reports that Governor Umo Eno suspended his daughter, Helen Eno Obareki, as Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady and locked her out of the office building.
In a press release dated October 12, 2026, the government described the report published by The Guide Newspaper as false, insisting that Obareki remains in her position.
The government explained that the building housing the Office of the First Lady was undergoing renovation, dismissing the claim that she had been prevented from accessing the premises.
It challenged the newspaper to produce a suspension letter or other evidence to support its report.
The statement, signed by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, accused the publication of breaching professional journalistic standards and misleading the public.
The government warned that it would not allow what it described as false reports about the state to go unchallenged, adding that further publications of this nature could attract legal action.
It also called on the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to caution the newspaper and urged the publication to retract the report and correct what it described as a misrepresentation of events.
While expressing its commitment to press freedom and the public’s right to accurate information, the state government said media organisations must uphold truth, fairness and professional responsibility.
The government’s statement did not include a response from The Guide Newspaper to the allegations or indicate whether the publication had been contacted for comment.
