The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Kwara State, Engr. Sulaiman Bolakale Kawu Agaka, has pledged to prioritise youth empowerment and small business development if elected governor in the 2027 elections.
Kawu made the commitment on Saturday while attending the Yahaya Seriki Empowerment and Enterprise Colloquium at the Arca Santa Event Place in Ilorin.
The event, initiated by Ambassador Yahaya Seriki, brought together entrepreneurs, community leaders, youth groups, market associations and beneficiaries from different parts of the state to discuss enterprise development, job creation and opportunities for small business owners.
Speaking at the gathering, Kawu commended Seriki for his efforts to support young people and entrepreneurs through the empowerment initiative, describing it as an example of how private individuals can contribute to community development.
He said small businesses had an important role to play in reducing unemployment and helping families improve their economic circumstances.
According to the PDP candidate, many young people in Kwara have business ideas and the willingness to work but struggle to access funding, mentorship and an environment that supports business growth.
He said his proposed administration would focus on creating policies that make it easier for businesses to access finance, reduce the cost of doing business and remove unnecessary obstacles facing entrepreneurs.
Kawu added that his vision for the state centred on empowering young people, strengthening small and medium-scale enterprises and ensuring that the benefits of economic activities reach residents.
He described initiatives such as the Yahaya Seriki empowerment programme as consistent with these objectives and called for greater support for efforts that create opportunities for people across the state.
Addressing beneficiaries, the governorship candidate encouraged them to make productive use of the items and support they received, urging them to see the assistance as an opportunity to build sustainable livelihoods rather than a one-time benefit.
He also expressed his willingness to work with individuals and organisations committed to Kwara’s development, regardless of their political affiliations.
The colloquium featured presentations on enterprise development, panel discussions and the distribution of empowerment items to beneficiaries. It also provided a platform for entrepreneurs and community stakeholders to exchange ideas on supporting businesses and expanding economic opportunities in the state.
Kawu thanked Seriki for the invitation and his contributions to Kwara State, expressing hope that the programme would translate into lasting benefits for the beneficiaries and the wider community.
