The National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) has announced plans to challenge a Federal High Court ruling in Lagos following a lawsuit filed by the Hotel Owners and Managers Association of Lagos (HOMAL).
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 15, 2026, the institute said it would obtain a certified true copy of the judgment and consult its legal advisers on the appropriate steps to take on appeal.
NIHOTOUR maintained that it remained committed to its statutory responsibilities and the promotion of professional standards in Nigeria’s hospitality, travel and tourism industries.
The institute said the dispute raised broader questions about professional training, workforce competence and the standards needed to make Nigeria a more competitive tourism destination.
It argued that recognised qualifications and continuous training were important for improving service delivery, building consumer confidence and strengthening the reputation of the country’s hospitality sector.
However, NIHOTOUR acknowledged the concerns of hotel owners and operators, including the need to protect jobs, attract investment and maintain a viable business environment. It said these priorities should not conflict with efforts to improve professional standards.
The institute added that it would comply with applicable court orders while reviewing its legal options, stressing that disagreements over regulatory authority should be resolved through the courts and constructive engagement between relevant federal and state institutions.
NIHOTOUR said its broader objective was to build a more skilled workforce that could meet the needs of employers, investors and visitors to Nigeria.
The institute said it would provide further updates as the legal process progresses.
