The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, describing the inauguration of its presidential campaign council in Abuja as an attempt to establish a one-party state.
The ADC-PCC Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, made the allegation on Wednesday while reacting to the APC campaign council’s inauguration.
Ologbondiyan accused the ruling party of pressuring opposition governors to align with the APC or participate in its presidential campaign council despite remaining members of their respective parties.
He described the alleged actions as political intimidation, arguing that they threatened the country’s democratic system and weakened opposition parties.
The ADC-PCC spokesman also alleged that national institutions, security agencies and the judiciary were being used to advance partisan interests and weaken political opposition. He called on Nigerians, civil society organisations and the international community to resist what he described as growing intolerance towards dissenting voices.
Ologbondiyan further criticised the government over the economic hardship, hunger and insecurity facing Nigerians, accusing the ruling political establishment of prioritising the retention of power over citizens’ welfare.
He said the country’s democratic journey was facing serious challenges, adding that the situation was inconsistent with the ideals for which pro-democracy activists, including the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, fought.
The ADC-PCC spokesman also expressed confidence in the presidential ticket of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, describing both politicians as experienced leaders capable of addressing Nigeria’s challenges.
He singled out Atiku, whom he described as a committed democrat with the national reach and political experience to unite the country and rebuild confidence in democratic institutions.
The council urged Nigerians and relevant stakeholders to support efforts to protect multiparty democracy and oppose what it characterised as the APC’s attempt to consolidate political power.
The allegations were contained in a statement signed by Ologbondiyan. The statement did not include a response from the APC to the accusations.
