Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) has introduced Google Pay for GTBank customers and businesses using its Squad payment gateway, allowing the financial group to support both customers making online payments and merchants receiving them.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, coinciding with the launch of Google Pay in Nigeria.
Under the arrangement, GTBank customers can add eligible debit cards to Google Wallet and use Google Pay to make online payments locally and internationally. At the same time, businesses using Squad, the payment gateway operated by GTCO’s payments subsidiary, HabariPay, can now offer Google Pay as a payment option at checkout.
For GTBank customers, the process involves adding an eligible debit card to Google Wallet once. When making a purchase on a website that accepts Google Pay, customers can select the payment option, choose their saved card and confirm the transaction without repeatedly entering their card details.
The service uses a digital token in place of the actual card number, helping to protect customers’ payment information during transactions. It can be used for online purchases such as subscriptions, travel bookings, food delivery, bills and other digital services.
Businesses on Squad will also be able to offer Google Pay alongside existing payment options, including cards, bank transfers and USSD. The feature is enabled by default for merchants on the platform, although businesses can choose to switch it off.
GTCO said the move could make online shopping more convenient by reducing the number of steps customers need to complete before paying. For merchants, a simpler checkout process could help reduce the number of customers who abandon purchases before completing payment.
Businesses on Squad that are set up to accept international payments can also receive payments through Google Pay from customers abroad, potentially making it easier for Nigerian businesses to serve buyers outside the country, including members of the diaspora.
Commenting on the launch, GTCO Group Chief Executive Officer, Segun Agbaje, said the group was positioning itself to serve customers and merchants from both sides of an online transaction.
He noted that some online purchases are abandoned not because payments are declined, but because customers give up during the checkout process.
Agbaje said the launch reflects the group’s effort to make digital transactions simpler and safer, adding that GTBank customers can now pay with Google Pay while businesses using Squad can accept it.
He also said the integration demonstrates how GTCO’s banking and payments businesses can work together to improve the customer experience.
HabariPay Managing Director, Eduofon Japhet, said the addition would give Squad merchants access to a payment option that allows customers to pay using cards already saved in Google Wallet.
According to him, merchants do not need to carry out a new integration to offer Google Pay through the Squad checkout they already use.
GTBank customers can add eligible debit cards through the Google Wallet app on Android devices or through their Google Account. More information is available on the bank’s website, www.gtbank.com, and the Squad website, www.squadco.com.
GTCO operates across Africa and the United Kingdom, with businesses spanning banking, payments, funds management and pension fund administration. HabariPay, its payments subsidiary, operates Squad, which provides businesses with services including online payment processing, payment links, virtual accounts and point-of-sale solutions.
