RMK Calls for Independent Audit of INEC Voter Register Over Suspected AI-Generated Images

General

RMK( Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a thorough and independent audit of its preliminary voter register following reports of suspected artificial intelligence-generated photographs and other questionable records.

In a statement, RMK expressed concern that the alleged irregularities could raise questions about the credibility of Nigeria’s voter registration system ahead of the 2027 general elections.

RMK urged INEC to explain how the suspicious images and records found their way into the preliminary register and clarify whether the individuals linked to them were genuinely registered and had their identities properly verified.

The statement also questioned whether the alleged irregularities could have affected the accuracy of the voter register, stressing that Nigerians deserved clear answers rather than general assurances.

While acknowledging INEC’s decision to investigate the matter, RMK insisted that the process should be thorough, transparent and independent of the commission’s internal structures.

According to the statement, the findings should be made public, with anyone found responsible for wrongdoing held accountable in line with the law.

RMK also called for a comprehensive review of the preliminary register to identify and verify questionable entries, investigate possible duplicate or artificial identities, and correct any irregularities without disenfranchising eligible voters.

The statement warned against the misuse of technology, including artificial intelligence, to compromise the electoral process, noting that the integrity of the voter register was essential to public confidence in the 2027 elections.

It stressed that every eligible Nigerian must be able to exercise their right to vote and that no one should be allowed to manipulate the registration system to undermine the country’s democracy.

RMK maintained that the credibility of the 2027 general elections would depend, in part, on INEC’s ability to produce a reliable voter register and address the concerns raised over the reported suspicious records.
