“Let’s End Child Marriage,” Remi Tinubu Urges on International Day of the Girl Child

General

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on families, community leaders and policymakers to do more to protect girls’ rights, end child marriage and improve access to education, healthcare and other opportunities.

She made the call in a message marking the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, observed on Sunday, October 11, under the theme, “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights.”

The First Lady said every girl deserved the opportunity to learn, grow and pursue her ambitions without discrimination, violence or harmful practices that could limit her future.

She urged families and communities to protect girls from practices that threaten their well-being, while encouraging government leaders and policymakers to prioritise their education, health and overall development.

According to her, investing in girls benefits not only individuals but also their families, communities and the country at large.

“When girls thrive, families prosper, communities grow stronger and nations advance,” she said.

The International Day of the Girl Child draws attention to the challenges girls face around the world and calls for greater efforts to protect their rights, promote gender equality and ensure they have the opportunities needed to reach their full potential.
