President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, following their historic victory at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The Flamingos defeated Japan 2-1 in Saturday’s final in Rabat to become the first African team to win the tournament, marking a significant achievement for Nigerian football and the continent.

In a statement issued on Saturday, November 7, by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the victory as a proud moment for Nigeria and a landmark for African women’s football.

The President said he received the news upon his return from campaign engagements in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, describing the triumph as wonderful news that had given Nigerians another reason to celebrate.

He praised the players for their courage, discipline and determination, noting that they had fulfilled their promise to bring the trophy home after defeating their opponents in the semi-final.

Tinubu also highlighted the team’s journey throughout the competition, saying their achievement would inspire millions of young Nigerian girls who aspire to excel in sports and other fields.

The President specifically commended Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku, whose goals secured Nigeria’s victory in the final, while praising the entire squad for their teamwork and commitment.

He extended his congratulations to the coaching crew, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC), acknowledging their contributions to the team’s success.

Tinubu also used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to grassroots sports development and creating more opportunities for young Nigerians, particularly girls, to discover and develop their talents.

He said the players had written their names in gold and made the country immensely proud.
