Deji Adeyanju Urges Wike to Suspend Demolition Plans Around Amnesty International Office

General

Lawyer and human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to suspend proposed demolitions along a public utility corridor in Maitama, Abuja, warning that the plans could raise concerns about flood control and residents’ safety.

Adeyanju questioned the reported move to convert a green area along the corridor into a private estate, particularly given the corridor’s stated role in addressing flooding risks in the area.

He also raised concerns over the proposed demolition of structures around the National Office of Amnesty International Nigeria, urging the FCT Administration to explain the circumstances surrounding the development.

In a statement, Adeyanju called for clarification on the allocation of Plot 5334 to Hammari Energy Limited, arguing that the drainage function of the corridor, the safety of neighbouring properties and ongoing dispute resolution processes needed to be considered before any demolition proceeded.

He urged Wike and the relevant authorities to halt the planned demolitions pending an independent technical assessment and a transparent review of the land allocation.

According to the lawyer, decisions concerning public land and infrastructure should not put residents at risk or compromise facilities designed to address environmental challenges such as flooding.

Adeyanju maintained that the authorities needed to resolve the concerns surrounding the corridor and the land allocation before taking further action.

The FCT Administration’s response to the concerns raised by Adeyanju was not included in his statement.
