Ogun 2027: PDP Deputy Candidate Confident of Adebutu’s Victory

General

Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deputy governorship candidate in Ogun State for the 2027 election, has expressed confidence that her principal, Ladi Adebutu, will emerge as the next governor of the state.

Sowunmi-Kolapo made the statement on Friday after Jumat prayers at the headquarters of the Nawair-ud-deen Society in Abeokuta, where Muslim leaders also offered prayers for her and Adebutu ahead of the election.

Speaking with journalists, she addressed the controversy surrounding a list published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying she believed the issue was an unintended omission by the commission.

She also expressed confidence in INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, describing him as a respected professional who would protect his integrity. She added that she believed President Bola Tinubu was committed to ensuring free and fair elections.

Reacting to the jubilation among members of the ruling party following the publication of the INEC list, Sowunmi-Kolapo dismissed their excitement, describing it as a sign of fear ahead of the election.

She insisted that the PDP remained determined to challenge the ruling party and accused some political leaders of prioritising personal interests over the welfare and heritage of Ogun State residents.

According to her, an Adebutu-led administration would focus on citizens’ welfare, ensure greater financial autonomy for local governments and improve accountability at the grassroots level.

At the gathering, leaders of the Nawair-ud-deen Society expressed support for Sowunmi-Kolapo and Adebutu, saying both candidates deserved the backing of the Muslim community.

The Chief Imam of the society’s Abeokuta headquarters and Ogun State, Sheikh Tiamiyu Olamigoke, led prayers for the candidates’ success and the progress of the state.

Alhaja Risikat Ogunfemi, the Otun Iya Sunnah of Egbaland, also urged members of the society and the wider Muslim community to support Sowunmi-Kolapo, describing her as someone who would serve the people if elected.

The meeting ended with prayers for the protection of the PDP candidates and the development of Ogun State ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
