The Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, has congratulated Nigeria’s Flamingos following their historic victory at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The Flamingos defeated Japan 2-1 in Saturday’s final at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat to become the first African team to win the competition.

Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 39th minute before Oluebube Umejiaku extended the lead two minutes into the second half. Japan’s Fuki Ito pulled one back in the 80th minute, but Nigeria held on to secure the historic title.

In a congratulatory message issued on Sunday, November 8, Meranda praised the players for their determination, resilience and teamwork throughout the tournament, describing their achievement as a proud moment for the country.

She said the victory had given Nigerians another reason to celebrate and would serve as an inspiration to young girls who aspire to excel in sports.

“I am immensely proud of our Flamingos for bringing the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy home to Nigeria. Their determination, unity, and excellence on the world stage have made the entire country proud,” she said.

Meranda added that the team’s success had shown that Nigerian youths could compete and achieve at the highest level when they remained committed to their goals.

The Deputy Speaker also commended the coaching crew, the Nigeria Football Federation and other stakeholders for their contributions to the development of women’s football.

She further reaffirmed the Lagos State House of Assembly’s commitment to youth and sports development, particularly through grassroots football programmes and opportunities for young female athletes across the state.

Meranda called on Nigerians to celebrate the Flamingos’ achievement, describing it as a symbol of national pride, unity and the potential of the country’s younger generation.
