Power Minister Gives 72-Hour Timeline for Gradual Electricity Restoration

General

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has assured Nigerians experiencing prolonged electricity outages that efforts are underway to restore supply, with the first affected power generating units expected to return to service within 48 to 72 hours.

Tegbe gave the assurance in a statement addressing recent electricity disruptions affecting households and businesses in four states, including Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He attributed the decline in power supply to a combination of planned maintenance at the Egbin Power Station, gas supply challenges affecting some thermal power plants and the sabotage of critical electricity transmission infrastructure.

According to the minister, the challenges have reduced the amount of electricity available on the national grid, forcing operators to introduce load shedding in some areas to manage the limited supply.

He added that damage to key transmission lines had further complicated the situation by restricting alternative routes for delivering electricity to affected communities, particularly in Lagos.

Acknowledging the difficulties caused by the outages, Tegbe said he understood the pressure the situation had placed on households, businesses and commercial activities.

He explained that the Ministry of Power was working with operators across the electricity value chain to address the problems and restore supply in phases.

The minister said the immediate priority was to return affected generating units to operation, while efforts were also being intensified to improve gas supply to thermal power plants and speed up repairs to damaged transmission infrastructure.

He stressed that restoring electricity required coordinated efforts across generation, gas supply and transmission to ensure that additional power produced could be delivered to consumers.

Tegbe appealed to affected Nigerians to remain patient while technical teams worked to stabilise the system, promising to provide further updates as the restoration process progresses.

The Ministry of Power also reiterated its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to address the supply challenges and improve electricity delivery across the affected areas.
